The two disciples heard him say these words and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned around, and seeing that they were following him, he said to them : What are you looking for ? They answered him : Rabbi (meaning master), where do you live ? Come, he said to them, and see. John 1. 37-39

As we read the Gospels, we notice that Jesus often asks questions. His very first word in the Gospel according to John is one : "What are you looking for ?" Throughout this Gospel, Jesus questions his interlocutors, disciples or not.

He does this to get them to think, to enlighten their desires, to flush out the lies and bring out the truth. Jesus' questions break through the screed of our prejudices, shedding unexpected light on our most hidden motivations and desires. In this series on the questions of Jesus, we will listen to some of them, allowing each of us to be questioned.

"What are you looking for ?" Perhaps the most fundamental of the questions that dwell in us... Jesus asks this question to two disciples who follow him. He probably asks them what they have in mind, following him after hearing him speak. The question of Jesus also leads us to question ourselves on what we really desire by following Jesus.

The two disciples wanted to know where he lived, perhaps to be able to come back and question him, and thus get to know him better. By his answer, Jesus welcomes them : "Come and see". To come to Jesus is to believe in him, to believe that he loves us. Seeing it is the result. When we come to Jesus, everything becomes clear. It is the characteristic of faith which then opens us up to marvelous perspectives. This is what we found Andrew, Simon Peter, Philip and Nathanael, who, coming to Christ, saw in him the Son of God (John 1. 40-50).
