Lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd was coming to him, Jesus said to Philip : Where shall we buy loaves, that these people may have to eat ? John 6. 5

Jesus raises his eyes and sees a large crowd that he looks at with deep compassion. So he asks Philip : "Where would we buy bread, so that these people have to eat ?" Philippe replies : "Two hundred denarii would not be enough" to feed this crowd. Another disciple points out that a little boy with five loaves and two fishes, but he adds : "But what is that for so many people ?"

We too often underestimate the love and power of Jesus in situations beyond our control. God allows them to teach us to trust in him. It is from the little available, in the hands of a child, that he will accomplish this great miracle of the multiplication of the loaves, reported in the four Gospels.

The Lord seeks the cooperation of his own. He appreciates that we make available to him what little we have, and then he acts. He multiplies what is given to him here to feed the crowd, and for the joy of this little boy. Our situations of lack, he wants to transform them into an experience of his superabundant grace... The 12 baskets of leftover pieces attest to this. And let's take up the Lord's concern that none of it be wasted.

Jesus can satiate our hunger, fill all the needs of our lives : love, dignity, forgiveness, respect, happiness, hunger for God himself. And that, beyond our expectation, if we trust him by obeying his word. Jesus will say, shortly after this miracle : "I am the bread of life" (v.35).
