Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and said to them : Who are you looking for ? They answered him : Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered them : It is I. John 18. 4, 5

It is night in the Garden of Olives where Jesus and his disciples often gathered. All is calm, and here comes a troop of soldiers armed with lanterns, torches and weapons to arrest Jesus. It is not Judas, one of the twelve disciples, nor the soldiers who identify Jesus. It is he who comes forward and asks them :

- Who are you looking for ?

– Jesus of Nazareth, answer the soldiers.

- It's me.

They then recoil and fall to the ground.

Strange encounter : they have before them the Almighty Lord, and do not know it.

Jesus asks them again :

- Who are you looking for ?

– Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answers :

– “I told you it is I”, and he asks that his disciples be left free, without making use of the sword that his disciple Peter wanted to use to defend him.

Throughout Christian history, and even today, attempts have been made to “stop Jesus”. Some deny his existence, others refuse his word, what he said about himself, others do not want to believe in his resurrection.

And yet many have one day made this encounter with him, which led them to become aware of his true identity. For men, he is Jesus of Nazareth, but Christians know that he is the Son of God. One day, before him, the Lamb of God, all will bow down and give him glory (Revelation 5:13).
