"The couriers passed from city to city ... and they laughed and mocked at them." 2 Chronicles 30. 10

"They mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and mocked at his prophets." 2 Chronicles 36. 16

"The leaders, on their side, mocked at [Jesus]." Luke 23. 35

 
Mocking, laughing or mocking are verbs that translate contempt. In the three verses of the day, they are used against messengers sent to gather the people of Israel and bring them back to God, or against Jesus Himself, the envoy of God par excellence. God can not endure such attitudes which amount to despising His word and He condemns them severely (Name 15: 31).
Hezekiah, the pious king of Judah, re-established the worship of the Lord in the temple according to the law. All the people of Jerusalem rejoiced. Hezekiah then sent messengers to invite all Israelites, whether Israel or Judah, to come and celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. But apart from the men of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun (2 Chr 3:11), the people of the northern kingdom turned them into derision and did not join Judah.
A century later the inhabitants of the kingdom of Judah themselves mocked the messengers of God, despite the threat of war and deportation (2 Chr 36:16).
Four centuries later, the chiefs joined the jests of the people by looking at Jesus whom they had just crucified ... Yet he gives his life for them! He takes charge of the sins of those who believe in him and knows the abandonment of God. Jesus, our Savior, is plunged into extreme anguish ... and the world's reaction is to mock!
If people were able to laugh at Jesus in such a solemn moment, why should they not laugh today by hearing the Gospel preached or preaching the Word? Let us stand firm, like the messengers of Hezekiah; Let us persevere in the spreading of the message of God through the preaching of the Gospel or some other ministry. God finally blessed the work of these messengers: men of three tribes humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem.
Let us be thankful that the Lord sends messengers. Let us estimate them "high in love because of their work" (1 Thessalonians 5:13). Support them through our prayers or materially. We thus participate positively in the propagation of the Gospel of God's grace, despite the ridicule of the world.
