Refuse to play a role
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
Modern life seems perfect for forcing us into role after role. For example, we live in the same neighborhood all our lives, without however getting to know our neighbors. We go to church more or less regularly, without ever knowing or being known to most of the other members, without ever wanting to serve them or invest ourselves in the life of this church. We work with people and we play with others. Life constantly offers us opportunities to pursue “secret” activities, to play various roles, independent of each other. Since no one knows us in another context, it is easy to deceive people by creating an appropriate role for us in the situation. Someone said that our life is like a chest of drawers : a drawer for each hobby, each value or each pastime, or even a drawer for our work, another for our leisure and a final one to confine our religious life. For each of them, we invent a set of principles and a different language, and for each new situation we add a drawer in order to maintain both our anonymity and our integration into the different environments in which we evolve. Instead of being true and honest in character, whatever the circumstances, we prefer comedy, fluttering from role to role ! But God does not see us as a dresser with multiple drawers or as a motley collection of more or less successful performances, He sees us as a unique and indivisible person. For Him, there is no difference between the person we are in the shadows and the person everyone else knows. God asks us to live a life of integrity in every corner. There is no escape ! God created us with a will, a mind, a heart and a soul. The enemy lies to us when he wants us to believe that we can play various roles, a situation that will leave us mentally and emotionally divided, and worse, alienate us from God ! "What is the solution ?" The Bible said : "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." In other words, refuse duplicity !
