Ring the bells

Ring the bells

A lady once said to me : "I do enough things taking care of others for God to recognize my merit." She adds : "And even, I ring the bells !" Unusual activity, which reminds anyone who wants to hear it that a religious office is being celebrated.

When the Bible, which is the Word of God, is opened, what does it tell us, what is its message ? It tells us about Jesus Christ, the only means of salvation : it is not what we do that gives us the right to salvation, it is given freely by God to those who believe in the Lord Jesus. "Good works" do not come until later, they are the fruit of our gratitude, which makes us want to serve God : "By my works I will show you my faith" (James 2:18).

Why can't our works be enough to open the doors to heaven for us ? Because everything we do, even with the best of intentions, is tainted with sin. This one entered man, the first of them, Adam, chose to disobey God. Sin now contaminates our actions, our words, our thoughts. In order for us to have access to God, we had to erase this sin by judging him. This is why God sent his Son, Jesus to hang our sins on him on the cross and die in our place. "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).

Believing in the Lord Jesus is what saves. Ringing the bells does not help !
