Run after time !

“Teach us to count our days well, so that our hearts may come to wisdom!” Psalm 90.12

It is said that the famous pianist Victor Borge told a friend who came to visit him that he could tell what time it was, thanks to his piano. To prove his claim to his skeptical friend, he began to play a bright, vigorous walk. A few minutes later, a bang sounded against the wall and a voice yelled from the other side : “But stop the din ! Don't you know it's 1:30 in the morning ?" Our life is punctuated by the passing of time, our clocks and watches are merciless. Time flies inexorably without our being able to stop it from flowing. Harold Sala says he has long wondered why God could decide our eternal destiny based only on a period of 70 or 80 years. His conclusion : we are creatures of habit. Living for several centuries, like Adam, or Methuselah, would not change much in our conduct. God has given us enough time to prepare for eternity. Wanting to buy time, if possible, would do us no good. Mario Andretti, the famous racing driver, told reporters after his last race : “The years go by and I can't help it. If I could contract with someone, whatever the cost, to buy 5 or 6 more years of this life at the height of my talent, I would be happy to sign it !" Rich or poor, we cannot acquire years more. And if we could, we would surely make the same mistake as King Hezekiah to whom God granted 15 more years of life (2 Kings 20. 6). Moses was wiser when he asked God to teach him how to count his days. Knowing that our time on this earth is limited should help us reflect on the decisions we make, so as not to waste the time we have. We hope for eternity in the presence of God, but our time here is also important. So let us not ignore the opportunity we still have to learn to draw near to God, to love Him and to glorify Him !
