Science and conscience

Friday 11 June 2021

There is no righteousness, not even one ; none is intelligent, none seeks God... There is none who does good. Romans 3.10-12 King James Version

O God, create in me a pure heart. Psalm 51. 12 King James Version

Science and conscience

Never in history has science advanced so rapidly as it does today. Scientific prowess commands admiration. But human nature does not seem to have followed this positive development. Our world is also experiencing, if not more, moral conflict and misery than previous generations.

The philosopher Edgar Morin said : "Science progresses ; consciousness regresses". More than 500 years ago, Rabelais declared : "Science without conscience is only the ruin of the soul". Advances in science are even used for murderous ends. What about the spectacular advances in the field of genetics ?

Is human nature therefore incapable of making progress ?

This is what the Bible unequivocally says. She declares us all lost, "sold to sin" (Romans 7:14), incapable of conquering our bad tendencies, our guilty weaknesses, pride lurking in the folds of our heart... We get out of it ourselves ? It is an illusion. This is why God invites us not to expect anything from our nature, and to expect everything from him. To all those who accept this observation, and believe that Jesus is the Son of God, sent into the world to save sinners, Jesus gives new life, the only one capable of doing good : to love like him, to hate evil in all its ways. forms, to accomplish what is right, to find the strength to manifest one's moral virtues with humility. Living the life of Christ is the only way to not let my evil nature act.
