"They looked up, and saw only Jesus alone." Matthew 17: 8

 

In his biography, the famous jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong, tells the story of a lady who frequented her church in New Orleans. One Sunday, the orator was a guest and "the whole congregation looked at him" - with the exception of this lady. "She seemed to appreciate the acting pastor as much as she appreciated our pastor."
It can be easy for all of us to focus our attention on those around us and forget to look at God.

After the service, the lady was asked "why she had appreciated the substitute pastor as much as our usual pastor". His reply was quite simple : "Well, when it is our pastor who preaches, I can see Jesus through him, and when I hear a preacher who is not as good as ours, Over his shoulder and I see Jesus just as well. " She did not look at the preacher but on her Savior.

It can be easy for all of us to focus our attention on those around us and forget to look at God. It can be easy to see the mistakes of others, or think of worldly things like fashion and trends. But God wants us to realize that none of us is perfect, and that each one of us - even the holiest of Christians - will make mistakes. We must remember that "we carry this treasure in earthen vessels, so that this great power may be ascribed to God, not to us" (2 Corinthians 4: 7). Instead of depending on people or human things, God wants us to depend on Jesus.

Today, look to Jesus for all your needs. The others may let you down, but he will never do it. No matter what happens in the world, you can count on him. He is faithful. Trust him !

A prayer for today

Lord Jesus, help me to focus on you. It is to you that I turn when I need resources and direction. I seek your wisdom. I wish to approach you. I love you, Lord. In your name. Amen.
