See trees walking ?

"[Jesus] took the blind man's hand ... putting saliva on his eyes, he put his hands on him and asked him if he saw anything. He looked and said : "I see people, for I see like trees walking. Then Jesus still put his hands on his eyes and made him look ; He was restored and saw clearly." Mark 8: 22-25

The Lord has several times healed the blind. In this narrative he proceeds in two stages. It is not because he would not have achieved the expected result of the first blow but to teach a lesson to his disciples who had just shown their lack of spiritual intelligence during a crossing of Lake Galilee. When the Lord arrives at Bethsaida, a blind man is brought to him to touch him. He puts saliva on his eyes and asks if he sees anything. The man replies that he sees people "like walking trees". The healing is not yet perfect. He still saw nothing but confusedly (reread Mark 8: 22-25).

We know that in vision there are two elements: the eye that forms an image and the brain that analyzes and decodes this image. The blind man had to be cured of both the eye and the mind. This is what Jesus does by putting his hands on his eyes a second time. It has been said : "Every conversion is different, as is every healing. Some people enjoy a remarkable spiritual perception as soon as they are converted, others see the Christian realities first in a confused way, like this man ("people ... like walking trees"), before knowing the full assurance Of their salvation. They see light, but are unhappy because everything seems confusing. One day they say to themselves : I am a Christian, for I believe. The next day, they doubt their salvation because of sins they have committed."

Still others struggle in their lack of confidence and faith. From the promises of the Word, they seize only the shadows. They need to understand their reality. Their faith is faltering and the Lord must intervene to bring them to an understanding that reassures them. We sometimes have these hesitations, this blurred vision. Let us ask the Lord to grant us full spiritual healing. A Christian life is built on certainties, seized by faith in God and His Word.
