Serve your generation

“After having served the will of God in his own generation, David died.” Acts 13. 36

About a thousand years after David's reign, Luke states that David served his generation according to divine plans. A short sentence to sum up the lasting influence of King David as well as the limits of his service here on earth. Note two lessons that emerge from this statement :

1- Throughout his life David served God by doing His will. True, he made mistakes, committed sins, one of which still haunts our memory, but he received God's forgiveness and enjoyed His saving grace. Her life thus illustrates the importance of discovering early on about God's purposes for the life of each of us. It is not the evening of your life that you should finally think about discovering the meaning of it. Who among us would like to hear others wonder on the day we left this earth : "But what did he live for ?" It is said that at the burial of the body of David Livingstone in England, a person present, who was in tears of tears, was asked : "Were you close to David ?" To which she replied : “I didn't even know him ! I don't cry over him, but over myself. His life had meaning, while mine has none !” Paul writes : "Watch therefore carefully how you behave : let it not be like fools, but like wise men... Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is" (Ephesians 5. 15-16).

2- David was only responsible to his generation. We cannot change anything from the past or influence those who lived before us. But we can influence those who will follow us. Hence the importance of transmitting to our children and grandchildren the values that are dear to our hearts. And intercede for them as long as we breathe in this world. Each of us is responsible for our testimony in the society in which we live. This is why it is so important to warn the sinner that he is on the wrong road (read Ezekiel 3:18-19).
