Sovereign God (1)

“Thine, Eternal, is the greatness, the power and the splendor, the eternity and the glory, for all that is in heaven and on earth is yours. Yours, Eternal, is the kingdom and the supreme authority.” 1 Chronicles 29. 11

From the whole of the Bible there emerges a strong evidence : God is sovereignly elevated above all. In the process, the Word of God insists on evoking the authority and the power of a God presented as King, and even as King of kings, and Lord of lords. The term “almighty” applied to God is the translation of the Hebrew word El Shaddai. This expression is found about 50 times in the Old Testament. And in the Greek form, it is found a dozen times in the New. However, God does not content himself with attributing to himself the title of “Almighty”, He exercises this role in a tangible and unique way. Certainly, the elements and the observable circumstances in the world seem to contradict this affirmation, but what the Bible declares remains true, and definitely true. It is up to God to govern the world in general, and to nourish our reflections and our thoughts in particular. And this is what He does despite appearances. The disorder of the present time is obvious, and could make us doubt it, but nothing escapes God. Indeed, behind all ordinary or extraordinary events, the mighty hand of God is at work. God is above all things, visible and invisible. His will and His power are absolute. Everything He has designed and decided will come to pass. Remember what the psalmist says : “Let all the earth fear the Lord ; let all the inhabitants tremble before Him ! For He speaks, and what He says happens ; No sooner said than done !" (Psalm 33. 8-9). By keeping such truth in mind, and remembering it in the day, in the face of certain things encountered in this daily life, we will be able to see life differently.
