Sovereign God (2)

“He who sits in heaven laughs, the Lord laughs at them. Then he speaks to them in his anger, he terrifies them in his fury.” Psalm 2. 4-5

It is easy to doubt the sovereignty of God, but there is one truth that should not be forgotten : nothing and no one can challenge Him with impunity. Indeed, the Lord laughs at his adversaries. The prophet Isaiah brings to the attention of all the nations of the earth information that is both good and bad news : “Look unto me and be saved, all you who are at the ends of the earth ! Indeed, it is I who am God and there is no other. I swear it by myself, and out of my mouth comes what is right, a word that will not be revoked : Everyone will bow their knees before me and every tongue will take an oath by me. It will be said of me : In the Lord alone are righteousness and strength. Those who were angry with him will come to him and be put to shame” (Isaiah 45:22-24). Whether we like it or not, whether we agree or not, a judgment will come in its time, God's time, and the revolts, injustices, wickedness of any rebellious creature will be sanctioned. Before the sovereign God who has become judge, every mouth will be closed, frozen in amazement. Many who think God is an option will be confused. Sometimes even the believer is troubled, but not for the same reasons. Job, servant and witness of God, could say : "It is with God that there is wisdom and power" but in the midst of trial and painful daily life, he came to question himself. There is sometimes a great distance between the theoretical recognition of divine sovereignty, and the acceptance of the times we are going through, while God seems absent. Questioning yourself is not changing your mind or position; it is to lay the foundations in order to verify them. After a time of doubt, or fragility, Job rediscovers his God in a rediscovered intimacy. Theology becomes an experience : “Now my eye has seen You !” (Job 42.5).
