Sovereign God (3)

“Whatever the Lord wills he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the depths.” Psalm 135. 6

When the psalmist points out that “Our God is in heaven ; He does whatever He wants !”, he is not saying that God has his own way as a rebellious, independent and almost irresponsible person would do, without limits. Let's face it, when we dream of being able to do whatever we want, we touch on the arbitrary, the capricious, the whimsical, even the illegal and the forbidden. Now, the will of God is not the will of man, even of the best. When God does whatever He wants, He is not like tyrants, nor idols, nor false gods who abuse their power to show off, to dominate, or simply to exist. God never uses His omnipotence to use it in an abusive, unhealthy, clumsy or dishonest way. For if it is true that – as Paul writes to the Ephesians – God acts according to the good will of His will (1.5), the whole Bible points out that this divine will is always wise and intelligent, constructive and enlightened. Most of the time, men who want to be able to do whatever they want seek their own interests, sometimes by exploiting others. God, He, has only one goal ; He seeks the interest of man. Such is His will. What He wants is to save what is lost ; save those who are lost by doing their own thing. Now, thanks to His omnipotence, He can do everything and therefore His will becomes unlimited action. That's how He can achieve His purpose. What God wants, He can ! "Whatever the Lord wills, He does, in heaven and on earth." The poet Ethan writes : “Your arm is mighty, Your hand strong, Your right hand high. Justice and justice form the basis of Your throne, goodness and truth are before You” (Psalm 89. 14-15). Therefore, how not to pray : “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” ?
