Spiritual Drought

"If you do not listen ... the Lord will strike you ... with drought." Deuteronomy 28: 15-22

"My strength has changed into a summer drought." Psalm 32. 4

"This is why ... I called a drought on the earth." Haggai 1.10.11

Climate warming and drought are topical issues. We see the consequences in sub-Saharan Africa, for example. Seeds are difficult to grow, plants turn yellow and do not have vigor, fruits do not mature. Agricultural economic activity is threatened.

There is a striking analogy between the dryness in nature and the spiritual dryness that may be in our hearts, such as lack of courage, our feeble testimony, and so on. It is difficult to detect with accuracy the causes of the droughts that the earth knows. On the other hand, the Word tells us, by the verses of this day, at least three reasons which are at the origin of the dryness of the spiritual life.

- After promising great individual and collective blessings, the Lord threatens Israel with curses, like drought, if he does not listen to his voice. In the present period, we are also responsible for seeking the will of God to do it ; And we reap what we sow. It is not only a question of listening to know, but of listening to obey and to put into practice (see Matthew 7:24).

David had not immediately judged the sin of adultery committed with Bathsheba ; His communion with the Lord had been interrupted. As a result, he had lost his spiritual energy and vigor, the dryness was in his soul. After confessing his fault, he finds a trusting and happy relationship with God (Psalm 32: 5).

In the days of Haggai, every one thought of his personal interest and his ease, instead of devoting his time and resources to the reconstruction of the temple. Under the impulse of the prophet, work resumes quickly and five years later, the temple is completed! In our turn, let us love Christ and his Church and seek the prosperity of "the house of God which is the assembly of the living God" (1 Timothy 3:15).

If we see a lack of spiritual energy, weakness in our individual and collective testimony ... it is time to restore the true priorities in our lives with the help of God. We shall see tomorrow that God has not left us without resources.
