You have resolved to hold a daily personal worship for 2018 ? Are you already in trouble and wondering how to hold it ? Do you have the right strategy ?
Taking a big resolution is important. The Christian life is a life of resolutions. That of having one's personal worship must accompany us all your life.
You may be bad in personal discipline or you start from scratch, it may be hard to keep ...
Why ? Because in fact, this resolution involves several "sub-resolutions", such as : getting up early or going home at night, stopping another bad habit, reading daily, praying daily, writing, etc.
The idea, therefore, is to cut out your big resolution in X sub-resolutions that will allow you to get to change gradually and sustainably.
If your high resolution is the floor you want to reach, sub-resolutions are the steps that will take you there.
Reformulate your big resolution:
If you left by saying : "From today I want to do a personal worship every day", I propose you to rephrase it as follows : "This year, I will learn to hold a daily personal worship."
How to determine your sub-resolutions ?
I find that one simple way to do this is to work with the SMART tool, which is used in many areas.
SMART is an acronym that helps determine intermediate goals :
S : Simple
Your sub-resolution must be clear and precise. It can not be divided into other sub-objectives.
For example : read the Bible every day. Simple and precise.
M : Measurable
Your sub-resolution should allow you to know whether or not you will reach the goal, qualitatively or quantitatively. For example : read every day 1 chapter of the Bible.
A : Suitable
You must make sure that your sub-resolution is appropriate for you. Not too ambitious, but who challenges you.
Is this a real challenge ? Is this achievable ? Am I not failing ? Is it motivating enough ?
R : Realistic
Do you have the real means to keep reading 1 chapter a day (schedule, pace of life, energy) to hold this sub-resolution ?
T : Temporarily defined
Setting a duration helps to encourage you. Example : read 1 chapter of my Bible, every morning and for a month.
Concretely, what will this give ?
You have set your high resolution: In 2018, I want to learn to hold a personal worship every day.
Determine how many sub-resolutions this will involve by checking them with SMART.
For example :
Month 1, sub-resolution : get up every day 20 min earlier + read 1 chapter of my Bible.
Month 2, sub-resolution : add a 10 min prayer time.
Month 3, sub-resolution : move to 2 chapters for a month to test if I still have so much fun.
Month 4, sub-resolution : organize myself to add 5 min to my worship to take notes because I tend to forget what spoke to me the day before.
So on, until you have found the form of worship that will suit you.
Tip : At the end of each month, take a small assessment. Evaluate what worked or not and readjust for the next month.
Finally, do not lose sight of the purpose of your personal worship : to know the Father by spending time in his intimacy to love him more and more.
And what are your strategies for holding your personal worship ?
