Strength and Shield

"The LORD is my strength and my shield ; In him my heart put his trust, and I was helped ; And my heart rejoiceth, and I will celebrate it in my song." Psalm 28. 7

David, author of Psalm 28, finds in God his strength to fight and his protection to defend himself. Strength and shield are different but complementary. Force is an internal component of the warrior ; It allows him to advance, fight and win over his opponents. The shield is an external component, with no fighting value, but with an exclusively protective value.

"My strength ! I will sing to you ; For God is my lofty retreat, the God who is kind to me" (Ps. 59:17). David recognizes here that his strength derives solely from the God whom he wishes to praise. God provides the strength that every believer needs in his walk; In fact, if we rely on our own strength, our march is hesitant, trembling; The fall is not far. So, instead of trying to assess our energy level and asking us what to expect, let's look at God, stay in constant contact with him. Divine power flows freely within us if the communion is constant between the Father and his child. Refusing to waste our energy unnecessarily saves our strength !

"For thou shalt bless the righteous, O LORD ! As of a shield you shall surround him with favor" (Psalm 5:12). David has experienced that divine goodness is what protects him and he compares them to a shield. God is the protector of every believer in his walk. Unlike any inanimate protective armor, the divine shield is always in action, it never takes rest, it behaves like a true sentinel ; He continually watches over the believer, protecting him in the dangers of which he is conscious as well as in those who escape his attention. Let us be well aware that placing our trust in divine protection is indeed the best operation we can do to walk in safety.

God had said to Jacob, who was in fear and trouble in Bethel, "I am with you ; And I will keep you wherever you go" (Gen. 28: 15). He said this day to all his children who seek support for their march.
