"Give praise to the Eternal with the harp, give praise to him on the ten-stringed lute. Sing to him a new song ! make your instruments and your voices ring out." Psalm 33:2,3

Ten-string lute

Worship, like praise, is the fruit of a personal relationship with God. Both express the admiration and gratitude I have for the one who is great and who loved me so much. If my soul is habitually occupied with my God, I would be "skilled", experienced as a musician. The joy is felt from the first measures of the score. What should we think of someone who only plays one string without touching the other nine ? His performance would quickly become monotonous and boring. What about my worship ?

The strings of the lute suggest ten themes likely to fuel worship :

What God did for me : he gave his Son.

What God is to me : a Father.

What Christ did for me : he died to save him.

What Christ is to me : my Savior whom I like to remember, especially in the Lord's Supper, while waiting to really see him.

What I am to Christ : precious to his heart.

What I am to the Father : a beloved child.

What Christ did for God : he glorified him by his perfect obedience and dependence ; he took away the sin of the world.

What Christ is to God : the beloved of the Father.

What the Father did for his Son : after he gave his life on the cross, he resurrected him, “crowned him with glory and honor” and seated him at his right hand.

What the Father is to his Son : the object of his love (John 14.31).

No doubt we have other instruments to sound, for example those which tell of the glory of the creator God who has made all things good (Genesis 1. 31). May the melody born each day from our heart be pleasing to our God !
