The conscience

I strive constantly to have a blameless conscience before God and before men. Acts 24. 16

Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Amos 5. 14

The conscience

At creation, God gave man many faculties such as intelligence, memory, thought... Man was created responsible to his Creator. Since he disobeyed God, he knows what is wrong. Conscience is the intuitive knowledge, in human beings, of good and evil.

Each individual has a conscience : he is more or less ashamed when he does evil, happy when he does good. But what do you call wrong ? one might ask. We are currently living in a time when what was blamed only a few years ago is generally accepted. Customs change, and we come to call evil good (Isaiah 5:20). In this atmosphere, consciousness gradually loses its sensitivity.

By living in a world where moral values are constantly flouted, we risk becoming unresponsive. We still have a conscience, but beware! It tends to become insensitive because of the abandonment of biblical principles around us, it can even be completely anesthetized (1 Timothy 4.2). God does not change ; his eyes are too pure to bear the life of evil (Habakuk 1.13). The only way to keep our conscience in tune with God's thoughts is to confront it very regularly with what he tells us in his Word ; it will then be reliable, like a regularly maintained instrument.
