The counterfeits

I reflect on my ways and lead my steps towards your instructions. I am eager, I do not wait to obey your commandments. Psalm 119:59,60

The world is full of counterfeits : clothes bearing the signature of a designer, sneakers or designer watches... Often these counterfeits are offered in broad daylight and presented as genuine. They are sometimes imitated so well that it is difficult to spot them. But in use, the difference can be seen : even if these objects are useful, we do not find the qualities of the original.

Likewise, in the Christian life people may disguise themselves, appear pious and even zealous for the Lord, but sooner or later these hypocrites - this is what these counterfeits are called - are exposed.

To find out if we really are genuine Christians, let's think about our ways. But beware ! Today's verse does not teach us to practice some kind of soul-searching, as if we should adjust our conduct to our own ideal of the Christian life. Such an attitude leads to discouragement and doubt. The verse also does not teach that we should compare ourselves to more spiritual, more committed people. The great men of God never compared themselves to those around them. They just wanted to live a life of genuine believers.

The psalmist understood this : I reflect on my ways, and I lead, he said, my steps towards your instructions. He takes stock of the situation in light of the Word of God, the sure standard for words of truth (Proverbs 22:21). If he finds something to put his life in order, he acts on it without delay (v. 60). Determination to obey is one of the hallmarks of a genuine Christian life, of sincere faith : If anyone loves me, he will keep my word (John 14:23).

God uses weak servants, sure, but not hypocrites or false witnesses. He employs people whose faith is sincere, like Timothy, a young man.
