The crying of Jesus

"When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he trembled in her spirit and became troubled ; He said : "Where did you put it ?" They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. The Jews then said, "See how he loved him !" John 11: 33-36

Jesus came to take his place among humans, to live like them, to suffer their sufferings. From the time of his birth he truly shared their condition with all the pains and limitations of human life (see Heb. 2:14). Jesus knew the deep sufferings that caused tears to burst forth. The prophet Isaiah had already spoken of the divine sympathy in the face of the misery of his people : "In all their distress he was distressed ... in his love and in his mercy he redeemed them" (Isa. ).
The Gospels tell us three circumstances in which Jesus wept :
- At the tomb of Lazarus. His perfect compassion, at the sight of the human suffering engendered by death, the salary of sin, causes him to shed tears (John 11: 33-35). His power could have acted immediately to resuscitate Lazarus, but Jesus enters into the grief of men. It leaves emotion invading it. His example gives full meaning to this verse : "Weep with those who mourn" (Rom 12: 15). His tears also express, no doubt, his sympathy for a hospitable family.
- On the road from Bethphage to Jerusalem. Seeing the beloved city, Jesus is filled with pain at the thought of the evils that are going to reach him. He weeps over the city and says : "If you had known, at least on this day - yours - what would bring you peace ! But now it is hidden from thy sight "(Luke 19: 41-44).
- In the garden of Gethsemane. There, before the hour of the cross and divine judgment, he expresses "with great cries and tears" his suffering before the evil which has invaded the world and which horrifies him (Hebrews 5: 7). He begs his Father who can save him from death, while declaring himself ready to take upon himself the judgment which the sin of mankind deserves.
Jesus, a perfect man, shows us how far love goes. He did not escape from any of the sufferings placed on his path.
