The darkest day, the most beautiful day - Proposed reading : Luke 23. 49 to 24.10

Jesus of Nazareth "passed from place to place doing good" (Acts 10:38). He fed crowds, healed the sick, and even raised the dead. His voice calmed the storm, his words gave hope to many. Obviously, Jesus was more than a prophet, much more than a man.

However, this Friday evening, after the drama of the crucifixion, Jesus was wrapped in a shroud and placed in a tomb hewn in the rock. It was there that women saw him and left him for the Sabbath (Saturday) time. His disciples are in mourning and weeping (Mark 16. 10). All are overwhelmed by the tragic end of their Master. They put all their hope in him, they understood that he is the promised Messiah. But their nation hated him and, in agreement with the Roman occupier, had him crucified as a criminal. God seems to be silent...

But at dawn, on Sunday, extraordinary facts occur : the earth trembles, an angel descends, rolls the stone which closes the tomb. But the tomb is empty ! God, who seemed so far away, showed "the excellent greatness of his power" (Ephesians 1:19) by resurrecting his Son. The darkest day is followed by the most beautiful day. The disciples rejoice when they see the Risen Lord (John 20. 20). They could have sang with the author of the psalm : "You have changed my mourning into joy" (Psalm 30. 11). The Lord is alive, mourning is transformed into great joy.
