The day of Pentecost (2)

“I will pray and he will give you another defender to stay with you eternally: the Spirit of truth.” John 14. 16.17

Pentecost is a specific date in the calendar of believers. It marks the first experience of the Holy Spirit entering the life of the disciples to sojourn there forever. Notice that Jesus had already made, just after His resurrection, a “demonstration” of the coming of the Holy Spirit : “After these words he breathed on them and said to them : Receive the Holy Spirit !” (John 20. 22). This event only predicted the upheaval that would unfold a few weeks later, and which would continue to this day. For God never intended to limit the action of the Spirit of Truth to a specific day in history. This date of the bygone past is only the beginning of an adventure that has never ended ! The Holy Spirit is always there, ready to take over the life and soul of any believer in order to make them a faithful and effective disciple. The promise that Jesus left to His disciples (“I am with you every day until the end of the world” Matthew 28.20) is the same as the promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit (“I will pray to the Father and he will give you another... so that he will stay with you eternally”). The Spirit was to replace Jesus in the lives of the disciples. For us, who did not know Jesus when He first came, the Holy Spirit is the guarantee that one day we will enter into the divine presence, while giving us the help necessary to remain steadfast in our faith and in giving us the same power or dynamic (dunamis in Greek, which gave the word dynamite !) as that which animated Jesus. If you want to experience this dynamic, do as Jesus did : walk in obedience to the Spirit. No need to look for manifestations of power and signs from the Spirit. It's only the results of the life of the Holy Spirit, if you'll let Him work in you without limits. This is what Pentecost means !
