The disturbing microscope

Happy is the man who finds pleasure in the law of the Lord and ponders it day and night. Psalm 1.2

A missionary was discussing with a native who spoke to him about the purifying virtues of the local “sacred” river. The missionary fetched some of this water and placed a drop under a microscope.

- Take a look at your holy water ! he said to the native.

He was horrified when he saw the little beasts jiggling alongside the rubbish floating in the water.

The missionary said to him : "As you seek the rest of your souls and the forgiveness of your sins, you and many men and women bathe in water like this !"

Some time later, his interlocutor returned and asked to buy the microscope. Was it to convince his co-religionists ? The missionary sold it to him. But what was his astonishment : as soon as the men had acquired the instrument, he threw it violently on the ground and shattered it into a thousand pieces. Then he left silently.

Don't many people do the same with the Word of God ? It reveals to us our true state before God. She uncovers hidden sins and all the villainies of our natural heart. Before this revelation we have the choice : reject it, break the mirror that shows us our real state, or accept it, confess our sin to God and ask for his forgiveness.

He has promised to give it to anyone who asks.
