The end of the "old man"

We know that our old man was crucified with him (Christ)... In the same way, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. May sin no longer reign in your mortal body to submit to it by its desires. Romans 6-6-12

The end of the "old man"

By coming to the Lord by faith, I come to know God and his Son Jesus Christ. I receive new life, eternal life. As a result, I also get to know myself better. And what I discover can put me off. Indeed, not only have I committed sins, but I see that there is an evil nature in me which produces these sins.

As a "born again" believer, I have a new nature animated by the Spirit of God to do good. On the one hand I want to please the Lord, and on the other hand I tend to sin !

The gospel gives me the secret of victory : the death of Christ who blotted out my sins also freed me from the slavery of sin that is in my flesh (my old nature). This sin was condemned by God on the cross (Romans 8:3). If I believe him, I have the victory over him and I am delivered from his domination. The verses quoted show us three points to remember :

- What God accomplished : "our old man was crucified with Christ".

- The consequence : "do you consider yourselves as dead for sin". This liberation is a fact accomplished by Christ.

- The practical application : "may sin no longer reign in your mortal body". If I consider myself dead with Christ to sin, he can no longer be my master, and I realize that my life is linked to that of Christ (Colossians 3:3). I can then look away from the evil that is in me, and live in close and happy fellowship with my Lord.
