The evangelists announce the coming of Jesus

"Then an angel of the Lord was with [the shepherds] ... and said to them, ... Today in the city of David you were born a savior, who is Christ, the Lord ... [The shepherds] found Mary and Joseph, And the little child lying in the manger." Luke 2: 9-16

"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea ... wise men came from the east to Jerusalem ... When they entered the house, they saw the little child with Mary his mother ; Then, prostrating themselves, they paid homage to him ; They opened their treasures and offered them gifts : gold, incense and myrrh." Matthew 2: 1, 11

The Gospels present several different announcements of the birth of Jesus, the Son of God who came to give his life for the salvation of men.

Luke's story depicts shepherds. The Orthodox Jews despised them : according to them, keeping a flock does not allow us to respect all the details of the Fa, such as washing their hands meticulously before a meal. The shepherds were often considered dishonest and their testimony was not admissible in a Jewish court.

God chooses these despised shepherds to send them his angel and make this grand revelation: they see the glory of God shining, they listen to the praise of a multitude of angels. Thus they understand the immensity of the mystery of the royal and divine birth of the little child. He is presented to them as the Savior, the Christ, the Anointed of God, the Messiah of Israel; He is at last the Lord. The glory of the titles attributed to this newborn contrasts with the social condition of these despised men.

Matthieu, on the other hand, stages magicians, foreigners from afar. Observers of the sky, they spotted a star that intrigues them by its brilliance and set off. When they reached Jerusalem, they announced the event. When consulted, the scribes do not seem impressed. The Magi continue to follow the star, discover the child, prostrate themselves before him, and honor him with gifts of value. These important figures, but strangers to the people of God, did not hesitate to make a great journey ; They were convinced of the importance of this event to the world. It is a lesson for the unbelieving Jews, but also for us, so easily impressed by rank or fortune. Yet God "does not consider people" (Acts 10:34).
