The friendship of Jesus

As David finished speaking to Saul, Jonathan became attached to him. Jonathan loved David as himself. 1 Samuel 18.1

The genuine friendship between David and Jonathan is a beautiful example of the friendship Jesus offers to every believer.

The victory of the young shepherd of Bethlehem over Goliath (1 Samuel 17) forged the beginnings of this magnificent relationship between the son of Isaiah and that of the king of Israel, Saul. Despite the social divide between them, the Crown Prince is not ashamed to commit himself in this way to one who will nevertheless be a rival for the succession to the throne. His friendship for David was born because he saw in him the one chosen by God and victorious by his help.

We can thus be drawn to Christ, Son of David, for his victory over a giant : the sin that reigns in the human heart and from which Jesus delivered us by his victory on the cross. Or because of what we are told of the love of Christ, Prince of our salvation, for all his subjects : He is not ashamed to call them brothers (Hebrews 2:10-11). The Son of God did not hesitate to leave his heaven of glory to join us. He was embodied in our reality and walked among men. He chose poorly educated men as his first disciples, and they became attached to him.

Like them, let us be attached to Jesus ! Is he not the one who says : There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends (John 15:13) ?
