The good God

Yes, it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10. 31

The goodness of God prompts you to change your attitude. Romans 2. 4

The good God

Some speak of the "good God" with contempt. For others, the "good God" is a reassuring being ! Would the good God send honest people to hell, who do their best ? Impossible ! He will take into account, we think, their efforts and their good works, and all will end well, since he is "the good God"...

But this expression is incomplete : it emphasizes the goodness of God, obscuring his justice and holiness.

God is good, and he is love. He is also light, therefore just and holy (1 John 4. 8 and 1. 5). He does not hold the culprit innocent in any way (Exodus 34. 7). But we have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Our efforts and our good works cannot erase a single one of our faults, so the sky is closed to us...

What to do ? God's response is this : "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Christ bore the punishment we deserved. God can then show his love and forgive, in full accord with his righteousness and holiness. "He demonstrates it in the present time so as to be righteous while declaring righteous one who has faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:26). To whoever believes, he opens his heaven, Jesus has acquired a place for him.

Let us not delude ourselves with this expression : "the good God". God is the "living and true God". Let us gratefully receive the forgiveness he offers us free of charge, out of pure grace, in his immense goodness.
