The good part
“Give your servant a heart that can listen to judge your people, to distinguish good from evil !” 1 Kings 3. 9
We all have busy lives. In addition to a professional activity, we often have commitments in associations, a church, a club, not to mention hobbies which can be just as time-consuming as they are exciting. In addition, there are family obligations which also eat up a lot of time. Even retired people have very busy days. Being overbooked is the excuse always used to justify chronic delays. Excessive activity isn't just about salary or passion ; even the unhurried person starts running in the corridors of the metro, mimicry obliges ! There is also the need to always be on the go to have the feeling of existing, to be seen and recognized, or simply to flee. We may aspire to calm and silence, the benefits of which we know, it sometimes seems - often - impossible to give in to it. Yet the frantic pace that we impose on ourselves, and that society imposes on us with more or less our agreement, is also what breeds depression, anxiety and even premature death. We are all built on the model of Martha, this woman who, receiving Jesus, never ceases to activate and exhaust herself in the task to receive and honor the Lord. She comes to slander her sister, Marie, who, rather than rushing into the kitchen, sits down to listen to the Master. According to Marthe, now is not the time to daydream when there is another urgency. However, the visitor dares to contradict Marthe's words and plans. The right attitude is to stop and take the time to listen. We never have an acceptable or legitimate excuse for postponing listening to God and His Son, especially as the experience is bitter : to postpone is often to forget. Marie chose the good part. Perhaps it was because she knew how to stop, listen and contemplate that she was the first to see the Risen Christ.
