Goliath's heart was insecure. He had been educated in violence, he had been made to believe that he was different from the others, that he would be the head of the army, that he would be the terror of all the enemy nations of his people. He had been lied to. He was no different, he was not of a different nature. He too was made of dust and water. Goliath looked to the earth, and it was on this earth that he spent his time fighting. He lived for the earth and the things of the earth, he lived to expand his power and authority on the earth. He took pleasure in the transient things, the things of the earth, and he made all his pleasure. All his attention was focused on the things of the earth. And when he looked up to heaven, it was only to swear by gods who were themselves made of dust and dirt. Gods who neither hear nor see gods unable to rescue anyone.
We would be amazed to hear the thoughts and understand the motivations of the heart of the unbeliever who lives with us. He was taught that life was about eating, drinking and dying. This is why the unbeliever does everything to enjoy the things of the earth. That is why he can not live in heaven and he will be refused by heaven : he is not of the nature of heaven. The language of heaven is not his, and heaven does not understand it. His many gods are nothing but clouds without water, idols incapable of reassuring and loving. The unbeliever thinks he is different, and he is taught to become strong in his head. He is taught to gargle and harden his brow against the obstacles of this world. The pride of man rises to such an extent that he does not even see it. He does not realize the lamentable state in which he finds himself. He was lied to, making him believe he was a great man. His idols made him believe that he could be different in the circumstances of life and his eternity. He got to be his own god, thinking himself invincible. But all this was only lies and seduction.
The Goliaths around you look good, their hearts are insecure. Behind their grandiloquent speeches hide a constant insecurity and fear. They need God.
