The love will cool

Because of the progression of evil, the love of many will grow cold. Matthew 24:12

Family members begin to say they are cold in the house. I then look at the fire which must provide the necessary heat. Why doesn't he feel his heat anymore ? Two things could have happened : the overabundance of ashes prevents the heat from spreading or I simply forgot to put the wood. I note that the fire is indeed not fed and that only a few embers are still glowing. I hasten to remedy this by adding small wood, then larger wood so that everything flames again briskly. Half an hour later, everyone is satisfied in front of a very active fire.

In today's verse, the Lord Jesus warns us that in the last days the love of many will grow cold. Why is that ? Because iniquity (walking without restraint, without law) will increase. It seems that we are in the days when the life of our contemporaries becomes without moral law, without restraint. We want total freedom, the liberation from all the taboos that, it is said, have held us back so far. And this attitude prevails in a majority of people.

If the Christian gets caught up in this current, his love for his Lord will diminish. When you approach a Christian without love, you are cold. If many are like him, one may even feel cold in the church. But as with an idle fire, there is a cure. What should be done ? First remove the ashes that prevent good combustion, that is to say remove what harms my spiritual health... it is up to me to discern. Then fueling, feeding my mind with holy thoughts and promises of God. Then, the Holy Spirit acting, my affections for my Savior warm up, a new impetus for him is formed. I can then bring a little warmth to those around me every day.

One thing is certain, you will always have to start over. My Master seems to indicate it well in the verses that follow : But he who endures to the end will be saved (v. 13). The Lord has in view the difficult times, on the eve of his coming in glory. We can apply it to our time and encourage ourselves to keep deep affections for our Master, until the end.
