Is it really this man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a desert, who devastated his cities and did not release his prisoners ? Isaiah 14:16, 17

The man who makes the earth shake

"The man who made the earth tremble," that masterful expression has taken on a little more meaning in our minds since the New York attacks of September 11, 2001.

The technology and the power of the media are such, in a time of globalization, that one man can really sow terror everywhere. Even though the inhabited earth has grown widely since the time of Isaiah's name, the expression is far from a poetic image, it is a terrible reality.

The expression "the man who made the earth tremble" brings up a few names in our minds as we go back through history : Hitler with his lightning-advancing tanks, Napoleon and his sophisticated military strategy, César Auguste and his formidable legions, Alexander the Great and his swift conquests, Sankherib, who was both king of Assyria and Babylon in Isaiah's time and who ended up being assassinated... all these men, and more, have "makes the earth tremble".

However, let's take a closer look at the context of today's verse (Isaiah 14: 12-20). If we put it in parallel with Ezekiel 28, we can think that behind the king of Babylon and the king of Tire, the Spirit of God points to Satan himself. Indeed, from the Garden of Eden, Satan made the earth tremble. He prompts Adam and Eve to disobey their Creator, to question his Word. The earth trembles under the consequences of this offense against God.

Satan will still be, in the end times described in Revelation, the one who will make the earth tremble. But his fall is certain through the victory of the cross and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah's prophecy : "How art thou fallen from the heavens, shining star, son of the dawn ? Thou art cast down to the earth" (Isaiah 14:12) will one day find its final fulfillment when Satan is cast down on the earth. earth and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 12:9 ; 20:10).

In the midst of the upheavals that still shake our world (see Isaiah 24:20), what peace, what security we can experience when we simply and continuously trust in our Savior and Lord, the Man Christ Jesus who has overcome man. that makes the earth tremble ! (read Luke 11:21,22 ; Acts 17:31).
