The Master is coming !

Put a belt on your waist and keep your lamps on. Be like men who wait for their master to return from the wedding, so as to open the door to him as soon as he arrives and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he arrives, will find awake ! I tell you the truth, he will put on his belt, have them sit down at the table, and come near to serve them. Luke 12:35-37

This character, who returns from the wedding feast, reminds us of the Lord who will return for his people Israel after the celebration of his wedding with the Church. But we may well take these verses to ourselves, since the Lord warns his disciples and all of us : What I say to you I say to all : Watch (Mark 13:37).

When a slave put on his belt (girded himself), it was to work, or to walk, or to wait for someone, in order to be ready to run to meet him. For us too, waiting for the Lord is not a passive wait, it is active in his service.

To wait for the Lord is to walk, to advance towards a goal. Paul was running straight to the point for the price of heavenly calling (Philippians 3:14). No place for those who really wait for Jesus, they go from progress to progress.

To wait on the Lord is also to be ready to open the door to him and to abandon everything. For this, he who waits keeps his life in order : he has no arrears, neither with God, nor with his brothers or sisters. Moreover, he does not cling to the things of the earth, does not hold onto idols, to reserve his affections for Christ.

To wait for the Lord is to keep your lamp alight. The Christian lives in the midst of a crowd of people who do not know Jesus Christ. His lamp is the testimony that he bears to them by reflecting Christ, his Master, and by living in a manner worthy of him : soberly as to himself, just as to others, piously as to God (Titus 2:12).

What a prospect for faithful believers ! When Jesus returns, he will have them sit down and serve them. Jesus crowned with glory and honor, Jesus the absolute Master, will become a servant forever to those who faithfully awaited him. Incomprehensible love !

Yes, let us reserve our affections, our energy to wait for Jesus. He repeats to us : I am coming soon (Revelation 22:7).
