I see a brother wash his car, at length, carefully ... And here I am to think : "This car is his idol, he spends all his time to take care of it instead of working for God ! But I will be ashamed when I learn that he is doing it to transport a handicapped neighbor, an elderly sister, or an evangelist ...
In fact I have forgotten that God alone knows the motives of our actions. "There is no creature hidden before him, but all is naked and uncovered in the eyes of him to whom we have to do" (Hebrews 4:13). Only God can measure our attachment to Him : "The Lord does not look at what man looks at, for man looks at the outward appearance, and the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Sam. ). He knows our heart (Acts 1:24).
The Lord said, "Judge not, that ye be not judged." Yet he does not condemn any form of judgment, as is often said on the basis of this word. For he also said, "Do not judge by appearance, but pronounce a just judgment" (John 7:24). The Lord asks us to exercise discernment, to exercise our critical thinking about the behavior or teaching of others, to make good choices, to prefer good to evil.
But the motive that must push every believer to action is love for his Lord in a sincere commitment : "Whatever you do, do it with the heart, as for the Lord and not for men" . The whole secret of a service useful to the Lord is in our motives !
In any form of service, there are many tasks that are considered unrewarding. But the Lord honors the most humble service when it is made for him (2 Cor 10:18). In this sense, there is no difference between washing a car and preaching a sermon !
"Do not judge before the time, until the Lord comes, he who will bring to light what is hidden in darkness, and who will manifest the intentions of hearts ; And then, for each one "... - will there be a criticism, a reproach, a judgment ? No ... - "approval will come from God" (1 Corinthians 5: 5) !
