In the Bible, wine represents joy and rejoicing. "The wine that rejoices the heart of man" (Psalm 104:15). In the New Testament, "the new wine" is an image of the Holy Spirit.
Yet, when I look at the Church today, I see empty vases. Why ? As practically all the prophets of the Bible have said : "Sin takes away gaiety and rejoicing."
For every mother, father and grandparent who has been praying for so long for their lost children and grandchildren, I say : "Hold on." Jesus looks and waits. His time for your child is coming.
The fact is that your boy or daughter is perhaps still drinking the old wine of this world. Your children or grandchildren can not abandon their old friends. They still feed wounds because of the church, have persistent grudges and doubts. But the vases which contained this old wine were soon to be empty. Their friends will disappoint them and they will be overwhelmed by the void.
When that moment comes - when all their efforts have failed - you will see the hour of God's power. Only a miracle of His grace can bring true deliverance. Then, continue to pray. God will keep His promise !
In light of all this, what should we do ?
Mary, the mother of Jesus gives us the answer. In Cana she told the guests : "Do what He will tell you" (see John 2: 5). Beloved, He is the new wine, the source of joy. And He will tell you what He wants you to do. Read His Word - and do it !
