"Do not worry about anything, but, in all circumstances, expose your petitions to God by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving ; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will keep your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4. 6, 7
It has been said that the opposite of peace is not only war, but also ... fear ; and that's true. When Adam sinned, he hid because he was afraid (Gen. 3:10). Because of his sin, he did not have peace.
And since that day, peace has left the world ! There have been peace treaties, beautiful declarations of reconciliation, Christmas celebrated together in the trenches of the 1914-18 war ; but the next day, we took up arms against each other !
What a joy to think then that one day, on this same Earth, the "Prince of peace" (Isa.9, 6) will reign in an unequaled harmony !
The theme of a drawing contest was "peace". Some candidates represented a sunrise or sunset, others a peaceful lake with swans, others doves (symbol of peace). But the drawing that won the prize was that of a robin whistling quietly close to a powerful waterfall !
Let's hear again the Word of God speak to us :
- "Call on me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you, and you will glorify me" (Ps 50, 15).
- "Then they cried to the LORD in their distress, and he brought them out of their distresses ; he stops the storm, [changing it] to calmness" (Ps 107, 28, 29).
It's every day that we have to look for peace. We would like to have a peace reserve for the week or the month ; but the secret of the confident Christian is to know that "every day is enough of his trouble" (Matthew 6:34) !
Are we afraid of the future for our children and grandchildren : in what world will they live ? So let us entrust ourselves to the promises of God, like this beautiful one : "And all your children shall be taught of the LORD, and the peace of your sons shall be great" (Isaiah 54:13).
"Go in peace" (1 Sam.1.17, Luke 8:48): this is the beautiful way for the Jews to say "goodbye". So go in peace, your hearts and your thoughts kept in Christ Jesus (verse of the day) !
