The power of the resurrection

Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came and rolled the stone away from the opening and sat on it. He looked like lightning. Matthew 28:2,3

So that you may know... what is the infinite greatness of his power, which manifests itself effectively through the power of his strength towards us who believe. This power he displayed in Christ when he raised him up. Ephesians 1:18, 20

The power of lightning is phenomenal. For a fraction of a second, the air can reach a temperature of 30,000 degrees. And everyone was able to be impressed by the damage caused by a lightning strike.

If the Spirit of God said of the angel who rolled the stone from the tomb of our Lord that its appearance was like lightning, it is undoubtedly to make us understand the infinite power of God who raised Jesus from the dead. Nothing could resist this power. This is what the second verse of the day tells us.

The early gospel preachers placed great emphasis on the resurrection of Jesus, as seen in the speeches of Peter or Paul in the book of Acts (eg Acts 17:18).

The resurrection attests to the perfection of Jesus' work (Acts 5:30,31) and gives certainty to every believer that he has a living Lord (Romans 8:34).

The scene recorded by Matthew is of paramount importance because our faith is based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Indeed, as Paul reminds the Corinthians, if Christ has not been resurrected (our) faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Each believer finds in this resurrection the pledge of his own (see 1 Thessalonians 4:14). He is assured that all the government of the world will be given to Jesus Christ - by virtue of his resurrection and elevation in glory - so that the will of God may definitively triumph (Acts 17:31 ; Romans 14: 9) .

Let's listen to David again. It assures our faith in the mighty God of the resurrection : God is for us the God of deliverance, it is the Eternal, the Lord, who can preserve us from death (Psalm 68:21).
