The precious blood of Jesus

The cup of blessing for which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ ? 1 Corinthians 10:16

You have been redeemed... by the precious blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18,19

Believers are invited to remember Christ's death together by attending his supper on the first day of the week. By drinking from the cup, they express that they have fellowship with the blood of Christ which was shed once for all. This blood of Christ contrasts with the blood shed in the sacrifices under the old covenant, sacrifices which had to be constantly renewed.

God has long seen this blood, since Christ is the foreknown Lamb of God before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20), a lamb destined for a bloody sacrifice.

It is by this blood that all believers are saved, whether they lived under the old covenant or now under the new.

Here are some expressions from the Bible that help us better understand the value and efficacy of the blood of Christ with which we have communion. This is the blood :

- of the eternal covenant (Hebrews 13:20),

- by which we have the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14 ; Hebrews 9:22),

- who makes atonement for the soul (Leviticus 17:11),

- which purifies us from all sin (1 John 1:7),

- who washed us from our sins and thus frees us from the guilt of our sins (Revelation 1:5),

- who justifies us (Romans 5:9),

- by which we are reconciled and have peace with God (Colossians 1:20),

- by which we have redemption (Ephesians 1:7),

- by which we were approached to God (Ephesians 2:13),

- who sanctifies (sets apart) the people of God (Hebrews 13:2),

- by which God acquired the assembly (Acts 20:28),

- whereby Christ bought us for his God, out of every tribe, people and nation and made us kings and priests (Revelation 5:9,10).

When today we participate in the Lord's Supper, let us remember the value of the blood of Christ, symbol of his given life.
