After crucifying Jesus, the soldiers took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took her tunic, which was seamless, in one piece from top to bottom. They said to each other : Let’s not tear it up, but let’s draw lots to find out who it will be. John 19. 23, 24

The prophecies of the Bible

Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies that pertained to him. For example, on Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem on a colt (Matthew 21. 5-9). 500 years previously, the prophet Zachariah had announced it (9. 9).

On the cross, Jesus "said, so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled : I am thirsty", and the soldiers presented him with vinegar (John 19. 29); echo of Psalm 69. 22 : To quench my thirst, they give me vinegar ".

Already the place of Jesus' birth had been announced (Micah 5.2). The Jewish priests revealed to Herod that their Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2. 3-6).

The Old Testament also contains prophecies which were fulfilled by the very enemies of Jesus, without their knowledge. For example, 1000 years in advance, Psalm 22 announced the crucifixion of Jesus : "They pierced my hands and my feet" (v. 17). We also read : "They divide my clothes among themselves, they cast lots for my clothes" (v. 19). At the foot of the cross the soldiers fulfilled this prophecy to the letter.

The prophecies already fulfilled have been fulfilled with precision, those which are yet to come will be fulfilled with the same exactness. The next one is this : "The Lord himself, at a given signal, by the voice of an archangel and the sound of the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven and those who died in Christ will be resurrected first. Then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them in clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we will always be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4: 16, 17). Are we ready for this meeting ?
