The protection of the cloud of God
Searching the Scriptures
He spread the cloud to protect them, and the fire to give light in the night. Psalm 105.39
This verse describes how the Lord guided and protected His people, Israel, during the 40 years of His journey through the Sinai desert. He spread a cloud like a protective curtain during the day, and during the night He gave them a fire which gave them both light and heat.
As a soldier in World War II, I crossed the Sinai Desert. I learned something there that allowed me to understand the wonders of God's gift. During the day the desert is extremely hot, but when night falls it becomes terribly cold and I could appreciate how wonderful God had provided.
During the day, this cloud was a shield that protected them from the fiery rays of the sun, but at night it became a fire giving light and heat. This is how God guided his people during the 40 years of the wilderness.
We understand from the New Testament that this cloud that turned into fire at night is a foreshadowing of the Holy Spirit, and that God still guides His people in this world today in a similar way - that the Holy Spirit is identical to this cloud.
In hot periods this cloud covers and protects us, in darkness it is a fire that illuminates us, and, when it is cold around us, it gives us supernatural warmth. All who are guided by the Holy Spirit of God are Sons of God. This is how God provides for his people today.
Listen to the voice of God
Let’s take the time to listen to what God means. God guides you in the choices and situations you face through his Holy Spirit.
Praying is easy. Talk to God as you would your closest friend. God loves you and he can hear everything. Here is an example of a prayer : "Lord, give me discernment so that I can better understand your way of leading and protecting me, especially when I pass through a desert."
Praise God
To praise God is to show him our gratitude. What are your subjects of recognition today ? Take a time to thank the Lord.
Act today
Now dig deeper into what you have received. What can you do to apply what God has told you ? Write down the concrete actions you can take.
Honor the Lord
Our route for the day ends. Let us pray together to honor our God.
"Thank you, my God, because you make a way for me. Day and night you protect me. Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, amen !"
