The Rebecca Principle (1)

"I will draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink." Genesis 24.19

One day, while Rebecca was standing by a well, an old man approached to ask her for a drink. She nodded without hesitation. Then she offered to water her camels. And this offer was no small feat ! A single camel can drink up to 80 liters of water. Let's figure it out : he had 10 camels, 80 liters each that's 800 liters to pull from the well with a 20-liter bucket, hence 40 times the effort to bring it up from the bottom of the well! Without doubt more than two hours of uninterrupted work ! What Rebecca couldn't know then was that her generous gesture would turn her life around. She was probably a hundred leagues from imagining that her action was the answer to the old servant's prayer and was part of God's plan. These famous camels would soon take him to Isaac's tents. Obeying the impulse of her heart, she made a gesture that led him to become the latter's wife, heir to Abraham's fortune and distant ancestor of our Lord Jesus ! Rebecca did not hesitate to go beyond the request of the old man, who was none other than Eliezer, Abraham's faithful servant. His generosity stands in stark contrast to the normal attitude of people in our society. She said : "I will do more than you ask me to do." Nowadays many of our contemporaries think : "I will do the bare minimum of what I have to do and I will try to get the most out of it !" Unfortunately this spirit is present even within the family of God. Yet Jesus told us : “If anyone forces you to go one kilometer, go two with him” (Matthew 5:41). The principle that Rebecca teaches us is this : if you look for the smallest opportunities in your life to be generous, your attitude will pay off a lot !
