The respect for marriage

"Let every man have his own wife, and every woman her husband to her." 1 Corinthians 7. 2

At present attacks against marriage are multiplying, in mentalities, in social life, in laws. Many human beings consider it an obsolete social institution, or even an attack on individual freedom. The general tendency is the rejection of principles, constraints, the established order ; it is the anticonformism, the exaltation of immediate satisfaction without responsibility or obligation : to be free in all fields, that is the motto of the new society. It removes all meaning to marriage.

The believer protests against this change, not in the name of a so-called traditional morality, but in the name of God who has revealed the truth himself in his Word.

It is God who specially prepared the earth for the human being, with treasures of wisdom and power. He placed the man and then the woman at his side, instituting marriage, and this from the time of creation : "It is not good for man to be alone ; I will give him a help that corresponds to him" (Genesis 2:18). He is not a colleague whom he gives to the man, but a person like him, specially prepared for him, who will share his joys and sorrows and who will be his help, a little like God is our help, our Relief (Ps. 3. 20). God then teaches Adam and all his descendants the divine principles of marriage : "The man will leave his father and his mother, and he will cleave to his wife, and they will be one flesh" (Gen. 2. 24)

The prophet Malachi speaks of "your companion, the wife of your covenant" (Mal 2:14). Marriage is therefore an alliance, an exclusive commitment solemnly contracted before God. This covenant must be made public and official before the authorities in place : "Boaz says to the elders and to all the people : You are now witnesses that ... I bought for myself Ruth the Moabite woman" (Ruth 4. 9, 10 ).

Trial marriage, common-law, PACS and other precarious relationships are not according to God's thoughts. One of the greatest joys on earth is true marriage, the union of a man and a woman, a union lived according to God with love, respect, trust, mutual help, sharing of joys and joys. sorrows ... What a wealth in a home where Christ holds the first place !
