The star and the Scripture sainte

"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judaea, in the days of King Herod, behold, the wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, and said : Where is the king of the Jews that was brought into the world ? For we have seen his star in the east, and have come to pay him homage." Matthew 2: 1, 2

The appearance of these magi is accompanied by no explanation. They were probably from the kingdom of Babylon, known for his science in astronomy and astrology. The knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures in this region dates back to the time of Daniel (see Dan 2. 48; 5. 11). Did they know the prophecy of Balaam concerning the "star that would arise from Jacob" (Numbers 24:17)? Did they know the precise indications of the angel Gabriel concerning the time of the coming of the "Messiah" revealed to Daniel (Dan. Did they think that, according to this prophecy, "the fulfillment of time" had come (Galatians 4: 4) ? The Word of God does not deem it useful to specify it; But, at the appearance of the star, the wise men understand that it signals the exceptional event that they await. They set out for Jerusalem by following it, to know where the king of the Jews came into the world. Jewish religious leaders consult the Holy Book and understand that the King promised for centuries must be born in Bethlehem, near Jerusalem. Then the wise men set out again, and the star which they had seen in the east went before them" (Matt.2: 9) ; She leads them to the infant Jesus.

The peculiar light of a distant star had caught the attention of the Magi, but it is the light of the Holy Scripture which clarifies and confirms the direction given by the star. In spite of the incredulity then in Israel, God watched over His Word, as it always did, so that it would not be altered. That is why this Word was able to teach the Magi the road to follow.

Nowadays, like the star of the Magi, the Word of God shows the way to Christ. God illuminates the heart of anyone who turns to Jesus, the Word (John 1: 1), the true light (John 1: 9), the morning star (2 Pet. 1:19). Holy Scripture, the Word of God, reveals the love of the Savior, the heart of God, his love of the Father. This Scripture is also the source where the Christian goes, day after day, to draw the joy, the hope and the forces that allow him to advance.
