The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked decays. Proverbs 10. 7 Segond Version 21
The righteous will always be remembered. Psalm 112. 6 Segond Version 21
The traces of our live
An artist recently wrote : “What is creating if not trying to leave a trace of one’s passage on earth ?”
Doesn’t this quote reflect a deep human aspiration ? From the beginning of humanity, Cain gave the name of his son Enoch to the city he had built (Genesis 4. 17). And since then, more than one capital has borne the name of its founder. “They imagine that their houses will be eternal, that their residences will last forever, they who had given their own name to their land” (Psalm 49. 12). God probes the deep motivations of our hearts, and he will evaluate the reasons which push us to want to leave our mark on this world.
The Bible gives us the names of men and women whose faith we are called to imitate. For example, regarding Mary of Bethany, Jesus said : “I tell you the truth, wherever this good news is proclaimed throughout the whole world, what she did will also be told in memory of this woman” (Mark 14.9). She had brought valuable perfume to honor Jesus. Some felt it was money poorly spent. But Jesus declares : “She did a good deed towards me” (Mark 14. 6). She had acted out of love for Jesus, her Savior and Lord.
Only what was done for God and for Christ will remain forever ; whatever remains will disappear without a trace.
