They [...] saw the little child ... prostrated and worshiped him. Matthew 2.11
The magi could not imagine more humble circumstances than those surrounding the birth of Jesus. Max Lucado paints the picture :
"His reign will have no end."
"The ground is frozen, the grass is rare. The cobwebs hang from the ceiling ... Mary contemplates the face of her son, his Lord, his Majesty. At that moment, no one in the world except this young woman can better understand who God is and what he did ... She remembers the angel's words : "His kingdom will have no end." The majesty in An ordinary environment. Virtue in manure and sweat. The divine coming into the world in a stable.
This newborn had one day dominated the universe. His clothes of eternity have changed into rags. The golden throne abandoned for an enclosure of filthy sheep. The faithful angels replaced by shepherds. Meanwhile the city buzzes, ignoring that God is visiting his planet.
The innkeeper would never have believed that he had just thrown God out in the cold. And if it had been announced that the Messiah was huddled in the arms of a teenager in the vicinity of their village, everyone would burst out laughing. All were too busy to care.
But those who missed the arrival of his majesty that night did not do so out of malice. No, they missed it because they did not look for it ! "
A thought for today
This Christmas, in the midst of gifts, garlands and the feast, stop and look for Jesus. If you know him as Lord and Savior, take the time to praise Him. If not, make him your Lord and Savior. If you do, you will never have a better Christmas.
