Anastasius Kircher (1602-1680) is one of the most important scientists of the baroque period. His thirty-nine books deal with mathematics, astronomy, music, acoustics, archeology, chemistry, optics, medicine, not to speak of Oriental languages, and so on.

This encyclopedic genius was called the "Master of the Hundred Knowledge." Kircher had a friend who denied the existence of a Supreme Being. To convince him of his error, he devised a stratagem. Knowing that his friend was going to visit him, he procured a beautiful celestial globe which he placed in a place that could not escape the attention of the latter. Indeed, his friend seized the first opportunity to ask him where this magnificent globe representing the starry vault and to whom it belonged.

- It does not belong to me, replied Kircher, and no one has made it ;

- That is impossible, replied his friend, you are certainly joking ! Persistent in his assertion, Kircher seizes the opportunity to reason with his atheistic principles.

- You do not want to believe, said he, that this little object is a product of chance. And yet you maintain that the celestial bodies, of which it is but a pale and tiny representation, have come into existence in a disorderly and purposeless manner. As Kircher pursued his reasoning, his friend, at first confused, was ultimately convinced that it is absurd to deny the existence of a God (adapted from The Saturday Magazine No. 220, 1835).

"Apples of gold inlaid with silver, it is the word spoken by purpose" (Proverbs 25:11). What wonder when the light of the divine word pierces the veil of human reason! Even the splendor of the universe disappears before that of its Creator.
