Thy will be done

Searching the Scriptures

Thy will be done. Matthew 6:10

The Bible reveals to us that God does not impose his will: he calls men to adhere to it freely. For this, everyone needs to say to themselves, more than to God : "I decide to do your will so that your will be done."

God shows us, through many examples in the Bible, that the great obstacles to the accomplishment of his will are selfishness, pride, prejudice and hatred that man displays.

God made known his will to Adam and Eve, but they disobeyed. God spoke to Cain and made his will known to him : "Rule over sin." But Cain did not listen to this advice. How many cases in the Bible are there where men have not obeyed the will of God ! Knowing and accepting the will of God is a daily challenge for us who believe.

Many prayers are not and will never be answered, because they are outside the will of God, as James reminds us : "You ask, and you do not receive, because you ask badly, in order to satisfy your needs. passions" (James 4.3). The word "passions" can be replaced by "desires". What we want is not always what God wants. Paul prayed for healing, but God's response was negative : "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is fulfilled in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:8-9).

That we desire health, healing, when we are sick, is quite natural. This desire is legitimate. However, God's will can be somewhere other than healing. Likewise, Peter heard Jesus tell him that one day he will have to go where he does not want to. "Truly, truly, I say to you […], you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you, and lead you where you will not want" (John 21.18).

No one likes suffering. But sometimes God allows us to take such a path. "Thy will be done" in such cases implies accepting the suffering. Jesus himself will claim to be exempted from a terrible cup, his prayer is legitimate, however his prayer focuses on the will of the Father : "He said : Abba, Father, all things are possible for you, remove this cup from me. However, not what I want, but what you want" (Mark 14:36).

If Jesus must have been faced with this opposition between what He wanted and what His Father wanted, how much more will we ourselves be and often have to repeat : "Your will be done."

Listen to the voice of God

Let’s take the time to listen to what God means. Ask God what his will is for your life.

Praying is easy. Talk to God as you would your closest friend. God loves you and he can hear everything. Here is an example of a prayer : "Lord, it is with confidence that I want to move forward by accomplishing, not what I want, but what you want."

Praise God

To praise God is to show him our gratitude. What are your subjects of recognition today ? Take a moment to thank the Lord.

Act today

Now dig deeper into what you have received. What can you do to apply what God has told you ? Write down the concrete actions you can take.

Honor the Lord

Our route for the day comes to an end. Let us pray together to honor our God.

"Lord, your will for me is good, pleasing, and perfect. Yours be the kingdom, the power, and the glory, amen !"
