Till he come
Whenever you eat this bread and drink the cup, you announce the death of the Lord until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26
A fiancé is going on a long business trip. He leaves his photo to his future wife, telling her : “when you look at it, you will remember me until I come back for our wedding."
The Lord Jesus Christ, the bridegroom of the Church, has ascended into heaven. He left us a memory of him: the Lord's Supper that we take until he comes to get us. It is a meal of love that we share in memory of him.
That is why, every Sunday, many Christians gather to remember the Lord himself, his death and his victory on the cross. They share the signs he left them : the bread that speaks to us of his body given for us and the cup that speaks to us of his blood shed for us. They want to do it until he comes and takes them away from him. The Church thus announces, to anyone who will listen, that the Lord has died and risen.
It is a message of joy for believers : they recall that it is because of this death that their sins have been completely blotted out, because the Lord died for each of them. They are happy to know that his death gives them access to the presence of God, that it is the foundation of their eternal salvation : regenerated and perfected, they will be the inhabitants of the new heavens and the new earth, where the righteousness will dwell.
It is an announcement to the world that forgiveness is still offered freely to anyone who repents and believes in the work of the Lord.
Finally, it is a terrible warning : anyone who refuses the grace of God has no hope of eternal life. God commands everyone to repent. Whoever does not obey this command will know eternal perdition, far from God as it is written : Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life ; but he who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him (John 3:36).
We measure the importance of announcing the death of the Lord until he comes.
