To the teachers of the Word !

John 2:5 – His mother said to the servants : “Do whatever he tells you.”

I would like, from this verse, to do something a little special and to address all those who are responsible for teaching the people of God and I hope that you will manage to follow me. The mother of Jesus is the image of the teachers and the servants are those who are taught.

However, a primordial principle is obvious : do what He tells you. When we teach the people of God it gives us authority and for many the tendency is : do as I tell you. But that overriding principle is that we need to equip the saints to learn to listen to God and act on that Word.

In the teaching of the Word there is an infantilizing attitude, that of giving ready-made truths ! The learner is nurtured but does not grow in maturity, remaining a consumer of another's enlightenment. The first mission of ministries is to teach those whom God has entrusted to us to hear His own voice. We should teach a lot about how to find intimacy with God, how to hear what He has to say to us personally. The path to maturity always passes through this ability to hear the voice of God ourselves.

Then we should teach them how to put that Word "rhema" into practice for them, to get them into "doing" ! Too many teachings are limited to a list of things to do or not to do, without an explanation of the merits of the obedience that is required. This well founded is the explanation of what God thinks about it, and to understand what God thinks about it, we must have an intimacy with Him.

My beloved, if we want to see our listeners grow in Christian maturity, we must detach them from ourselves in order to "push" them into the arms of their Lord. Teach them to speak to Him personally and to hear His own voice. Jesus said : “My sheep hear my voice” (John 10:27). Afterwards, we help them to put this Word into practice for their life and glory to God, mission accomplished, when they will no longer need us to do this.
