Too bad to be a missionary ?

Gladys Aylward (1902-1970) was keen to go to China as a missionary. She was sure that God was asking her to leave her native England and that a service for Him awaited her there. At the Chinese Christian Mission in London, we refuse its help, we try to discourage it. In vain. Penniless, she worked long months as a chambermaid. Little by little, she collects enough to pay for her ticket. She finally leaves England on her own and joins a friend in China. They open an inn, where many mule drivers stop and thus hear the message of the gospel.

After the death of her friend, Gladys does not give up. She is required by the Chinese government as a "foot inspector" to free girls and women from the practice of bound feet. Difficult task, but in remote countryside and through this work, she brings the gospel.

Little by little, her ministry expanded : she went to prisons, looked after and evangelized criminals, adopted children... During the Second World War, she crossed the country with a hundred children to flee from the army. Japanese. She is well accepted and loved by the Chinese, who give her a first name from their country : Ghen Ai.

Extraordinary stories from missionaries can make us think that this only happens to others... Gladys is a fine counterexample. She was told that she "was only a woman" and that she "was not qualified enough", yet God knew how to use it wonderfully.
